Deputy kills carjacking suspect after I-26 chase

A Newberry County deputy shot and killed a carjacking suspect on I-26 in Lexington County Sunday.

Phillip John Walden, 40, of Taylors, SC, was killed during this incident, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher.

Walden died at the scene due to multiple gunshot wounds to the upper body.

Agents from the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division are investigating the incident. SLED said the suspect was shot and killed during a confrontation with the Newberry County Sheriff’s deputy.

Law enforcement was responding to a reported carjacking when the deputy located the vehicle and attempted a traffic stop. A vehicle pursuit ensued traveling east on I-26. The pursuit entered Lexington County where the chase ended, and the confrontation took place. No other injuries have been reported.

The shooting took place at the 91 mm exit on I-26 E, the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office said.

The incident took place after a carjacking on I-26 near the 60 mile marker in Newberry County. During the chase, the suspect intentionally hit another Sheriff’s deputy’s vehicle, driving him into a guardrail. The Deputies involved were not injured.

The incident in Lexington County was the 26th officer involved shooting in South Carolina in 2021, according to SLED. In 2020, there were 49 officer involved shootings in South Carolina; one involved the Newberry County Sheriff’s Office.
