South Carolina will use a $9.33 million settlement to buy new school buses.
Lexington School District 1 will receive 22 new, propane-powered school buses, a Tuesday media release said.
The money comes from the September 2015 civil case between the EPA and California Air Resources Board, and Volkswagen.
Investigations found Volkswagen used “defeat devices” to cheat diesel emissions tests.
The devices resulted in nitrogen oxide emissions which were significantly higher than allowed levels under the US Clean Air Act and the California Health and Safety Code, according to the SC Department of Insurance.
As a part of its settlements, Volkswagen is required to mitigate excess emissions through the establishment of an Environmental Mitigation Trust totaling $2.925 billion.
South Carolina will use the first settlement installment to replace 78 aging buses at the SC Department of Education and to purchase 3 clean-energy public transit buses in Anderson and other parts of the Lowcountry.
