Does litter on your lawn belong to you?

Lexington County Councilman Larry Brigham and I thank Tom Poland for his articles on litter in the Chronicle and The Lake Murray Fish Wrapper. We certainly share his thoughts on the problem. Our Batesburg-Leesville town council budgeted enough for 2 part-time high school students this summer. This will be fighting a losing battle if we don’t address the root issue of both careless and deliberate littering. My next idea is to form a task force and create a database to allow volunteers to sign up, choose a road to clean, then report the date cleaned and amount collected. We’ll use that data to increase awareness, post a sign and increase enforcement. Please share with us whatever solutions you may run across as you talk others who are combatting the problem and winning. We in elected positions hear tons of complaints and cherish those moments when solutions are brought forward. I’ve always told our kids, once it hits our lawn, it’s ours.

Plastic bag ban a mistake

I don’t know where the Chronicle stands on the plastic bag ban but if you’re in favor of it, you can join the loser rag on the other side of the river. I guess there are few freedom-loving Americans left. When did the Lexington County Council become a haven of socialism? I gave 20 of the best years of my life serving my country to protect us from socialism and communism, 3 of those in Vietnam avoiding rockets, bullets and mortars. 2 years were in Iran trying to survive terrorist death threats. This was my part in protecting our freedom, not to boost the egos of those who think they know what is best for all of us. Council members pushing the plastic bag ban are nothing more than egotistical individuals trying to force their own desires on the rest of Lexington County. Were these members raised by independent freedom loving people? If their parents love freedom, did they get their ideals from some communist college professor? A few years back we partially cleaned house in the County Council because of a few tax-loving spend thrifts. Freedom-loving voters can do the same in the next election.

Scoop says he’s sorry

Scoop’s It’s a Dog’s Life jokes about beer vs. religion is an insult to those of us who are Christians. Making fun of one’s beliefs in such a belittling way was an eye-opener. I had always considered the Chronicle a positive community service. His statements were back-handed and negative about religion. I assume that Scoop is an atheist.

Joyce Turpin, Lexington

We have assured Mrs. Turpin that Scoop is not an atheist and he apologizes to any readers who felt offended.
