WEST COLUMBIA—Doris Sox Steele, 97, of West Columbia, passed away Friday, February 8, 2019. She was born on November 29, 1921 in West Columbia, one of six children born to the late Jesse L. Sox and Docia Howell Sox.

Mrs. Steele attended Brookland Cayce High (1939 graduate). She was a lifetime member of Emmanuel Lutheran Church and Women of the ELCA and a member of the American Legion Auxiliary unit #90 and Woodmen of the World. She was also a member of the D.A.V. Auxiliary and served as a State Commander. Mrs. Steele retired from the South Carolina Department of Vocational Rehabilitation in 1983. The Steele’s spent their summers at their beloved mountain cabin in Waynesville, NC where they hosted both friends and family for many years.

Surviving are her two sons and their wives, Reverends Stan and Stephanie Steele of Hagerstown MD, and David and Susan Steele of Myrtle Beach, SC; daughter-in-law, Becky Steele of West Columbia; sister-in-law, Louise M. Sox of West Columbia; grandchildren, Ashley, Andrew, Victoria, Rachael, Jason, and Derrick; one great-grandchild, Laney and many nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, George A. Steele, her son, Don A. Steele, grandchild, Shannon D. Steele and her brothers and sisters, Vivian Sox Shull, Yvonne Sox Wingard, Jessie Belle Sox Mitchum, Marjorie Sox Hall, and Julian L. Sox.

Doris was a strong and loving mother, grandmother, sister, aunt and friend. She impacted many lives through her strong faith and her determination to live a vibrant life. Doris lived through difficult times of the Great Depression, war, and poverty but overcame it all to build a loving community of family and friends. While she will be greatly missed by many, her presence will remain in her love for us and ours for her. As many people have commented, “There was only one Doris Sox Steele!”

Funeral services were held February 13, 2019, at Emmanuel Lutheran Church with interment in Southland Memorial Gardens. Memorials may be made to the Emmanuel Lutheran Church Memorial Fund.
