An early-morning collision caused power outages across Lexington Dec. 5.

Kyle Anthony Greenwood, 31, of Columbia was charged with driving under the influence after he drove his vehicle into an electric pole on South Lake Drive around 1:35 am.

Greenwood’s Dodge Charger split the wooden pole in half, leaving power lines across the road.

After taking a field sobriety test, Greenwood was placed under arrest for driving under the influence.

Greenwood refused to offer a breath sample, according to reports.

His drivers license has been suspended and he awaits an appearance at Lexington County Bond Court.

This collision closed a portion of South Lake Drive until approximately 8 am while Dominion Energy worked to restore power to area residents and businesses.

Dominion spokesperson Matthew Long told the Chronicle:

• The crash knocked down 2 power poles.

• 1,816 customers were initially without power.

• Of those, 1,714 were restored within 1 hour. The remaining 102 customers were in a 7-hour outage as the repairs were completed.

• Around 9:45 pm, Dominion Energy received several calls that a small fire was burning on one of the replacement poles. The fire was caused by a mechanical failure on the newly replaced components.

• Dominion Energy cut power to 70 customers so a crew could repair the 2nd issue. That outage lasted for about 90 minutes.

• Dominion Energy crews had to entirely replace and rewire both poles damaged in the initial crash. The estimated cost of repairs is $15,000, Long said.

• After the fire, a crew replaced the component which caused the mechanical failure.

South Lake Drive was reopened around midnight last Thursday night.
