Before school starts back up, many families will enjoy a summer road trip.

With the option of the mountains, beach, amusement parks and more within a short drive, it’s tempting to plan a trip every week.

As you get ready to head out on the road, take the time to ensure everything has been checked and follow these safety tips to have an enjoyable time.

• Check tire pressure, fluid levels, windshield wiper condition and more before you get into your vehicle. Being prepared for car trouble will prevent the stress of unexpected emergencies.

• Pack an emergency roadside kit with all of the essentials. Getting stranded on the side of the road during a trip will ruin any family’s good mood and vacation plans.

• Don’t drive distracted. Put the phone away and focus on the road.

• Stay alert. Don’t drive drowsy. Pull over for a rest or take turns driving.

• Don’t drive impaired. Not only is it illegal to drive under the influence of drugs and alcohol, it puts the lives of your family members in danger.

• Share the road with bicyclists, motorcycles and pedestrians. Warmer weather means more people on the roadways. Be courteous of other drivers and obey the speed limit.

• Remove your valuables and lock your vehicle when at rest stops and _| restaurants.

• Review the

traffic laws of the places you’re visiting. They may be different from what you’re used to, like hands-free phone use or allowable U-turn maneuvers.

• Never leave children in a vehicle unattended, even if it’s just to run into the gas station.

• Always wear your seat belt, and make sure children are in properly-fitting restraint seats.

Before you hit the road, make sure everyone is prepared to have the best, safest time.
