Dominion Energy and 5 other utilities are banding together to provide power to electric vehicles.
The coalition plans an electric highway through Charleston, Columbia, Greenville, Florence, Rock Hill, Augusta and Savannah.
Myrtle Beach and Horry County aren’t on the list yet, but they have a Tesla Supercharger.
Dominion Energy’s President Robert Blue said the Lexington County-based company is committed to help customers and reduce carbon emissions.
Many car owners are reluctant to buy EVs from fear of running out of power on the highway, reported Andy Owens of the Columbia Regional Business Journal.
Tesla built more than 20,000 nationwide charging stations, 8 in South Carolina, but there are still too few.
The Electric Highway Coalition plans charging stations on the Atlantic Coast, Midwest, South, Gulf and Central Plains.
The coalition includes Duke Energy which serves northern SC.
The chargers will be relatively fast with an anticipated 20- to 30-minute recharge.
That’s not as fast as a 5-minute fill-up at a gas station but better than charging your EV with an extension cord overnight.
