Ex-Lady Wildcat soccer champs face the University of South Carolina

Megan Classer and Mary Katherine Waters played for a second and final S.C. High School League title 3 months ago.

Last Sunday, the two former S.C. Coaches Association of Women’s Sports Players of the Year were back in the Midlands as College of Charleston freshmen. The Lexington High duo, along with sophomore and Dutch Fork graduate Meredith Holton, joined their Lady Cougar teammates at Stone Stadium to face the University of South Carolina.

All three came off the bench to see action against last year’s Final Four finalists. The Gamecocks came away with a 2-0 victory. Both goals came in the second half.

The former Wildcats had their share of supporters among the heavy contingent of Gamecock fans.

“We were both really excited about tonight,” Waters said. “We get to come back to play on like a home field near our friends and family who were looking to support us.”

Each talked about the transition from high school to college. “The speed of play is a huge difference,” Waters said. “Everyone is fast and the pace and the way they move the ball is a whole lot faster than what we’re use to. So that’s a big change.” “It’s also a whole lot physical,” said Classer, who had one shot on goal. “The girls are a lot bigger and stronger.”

On Thursday, the third former member of Lexington’s “Big Three” will make her “Homecoming.” Freshman Brooke Power and Clemson University will visit Columbia to face the Gamecocks.
