Attorney General Alan Wilson has joined an antitrust investigation of Face-book’s business practices.

47 state attorneys general are part of the probe

“Competition built this country,” Wilson said, “and free and competitive markets are important for social media platforms.

“We are part of a bipartisan group investigating whether Facebook violated any state or federal laws. To ensure that there is meaningful market-based competition, we will work exhaustively to verify that companies follow the law.”

The investigation focuses on Facebook’s dominance in the industry and the potential anti-competitive conduct stemming from that dominance.

State museum to get new director

William Calloway, executive director of the South Carolina State Museum, will retire next year.

A native of South Carolina, Calloway became executive director of the State Museum in April 2002 after serving as executive director of Kellogg’s Cereal City USA in Battle Creek, MI.

While at the State Museum Calloway directed museum operations and content, as well as setting and executing long-term strategic direction.

The State Museum Commission hired a search firm to handle the search for Calloway’s replacement. The job hasn’t been posted yet, State Museum spokesperson Jared Glover told the Chronicle.

Calloway will stay on as Executive Director until his replacement has been hired.

Truck drivers needed

Service members who possess the military equivalent of a commercial driver’s license (CDL) can now apply for jobs with interstate trucking companies.

The US Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration announced last week that it has published a new job opportunities website to help 18- to 20-year-olds find trucking jobs.

Interested service members, reservists, National Guard, active duty, or military veterans who possess the equivalent of a CDL can use the job listing resource to learn more about job opportunities that are available with participating motor carriers.

The online job opportunities listing page can be found at https://www.fmcsa.dot.gov/under21militaryjobs .

Neighbors sit down for a meal

Central Carolina Community Foundation’s 2nd ever On the Table event almost doubled its participation over last year.

The foundation reported more than 2,160 people in Lexington and Richland counties took a seat Oct. 22 to share a meal and discuss ways to make our community stronger. That’s a 44% increase from last year.

Over 216 conversations hosted throughout the day covered topics such as gentrification, diversity, youth entrepreneurship and more.

“The conversations identified ways we can collaborate and make smart investments of time and talent in one another. Many thanks to our table hosts whose generous investments in our community made these conversations possible. We’re looking forward to sharing the results in early 2020,” said JoAnn Turnquist, president and CEO of Central Carolina Community Foundation.

Applications are now open for Beyond the Table mini-grants at www.onthetablecola.org/grants .
