Jonathan Rumph, a former Brookland-Cayce High School standout and Georgia Bulldog wide receiver, recently held his 1st annual Community Building Football Camp with the help from several NFL players with ties to Rumph.

On hand for the camp were All-pro running back Todd Gurley, Mike Davis; Keith Marshall, Dominick Sanders and Damien Swann.

It was held April 27 at Brookland-Cayce football stadium, better known as Fort Knox.

An All-Pro running back of the NFC champion Los Angeles Rams, Gurley said of Rumph “that’s my brother, playing with football with him at Georgia, our ties run deep, it’s a brotherhood.”

Rumph’s reasoning for holding this camp is pretty simple - h0e wanted to provide something unique.

“We didn’t have this (growing up),” Rumph said. “It’s about helping kids make the most of themselves and better themselves.”

The event was for ages 7-18 and more than 100 participants were in attendance to develop not only football skills, but skills to help them better themselves in life.

Owen Plane, a freshman at Brookland-Cayce High, made this statement about the camp.

“This event is something I have been looking forward to because I always want an opportunity to improve as a football player,” Plane said. “We don’t have many camps like these around here.”

Rumph also brought out Rev. Kenneth Taylor from West Columbia’s Turner AME Memorial Church to give the blessing to kick off the event.

Taylor said ‘empowerment and unity’ is what it’s about.

“It helps empower young people to know that they can be anything they want to be,” he said.

Rumph’s camp also included a parent’s “enlightenment meeting.” At that meeting, parents received information about how to “propel their child to the next level.”

Rumph is currently an unsigned free agent who previously played for the New York Jets.
