Gaston man arrested on car part theft

Posted

Deputies have arrested a man charged with stealing parts off cars parked at a towing company lot.

Justin David Phillips, 30, is charged with 1 count of breaking into motor vehicles, according to an arrest warrant.

Phillips allegedly stole 2 catalytic converters from cars last month while working on a towing company fence, according to Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon.

Phillips then sold the catalytic converters to a scrap metal dealer about 45 minutes after he left the towing company.

“There’s money to be made in the sale of these items. That’s why it’s important for salvage yards and scrap metal dealers to be cautious during any transactions involving catalytic converters,” Koon said.

Detectives arrested Phillips Feb. 20. He has been released from the Lexington County Detention Center after meeting the conditions of his bond.
