Northside Christian’s Dane Sundell and Gilbert’s Ahleria Leaphart won a closely contested vote to earn this week’s Athlete of the Week honors.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek.

Sundell made major contributions for the Northside Christian boys basketball team last week. He scored 23 points, four assists, two rebounds and four steals to help push the Crusaders past Spartanburg Christian Academy, 63-37.

He cooled down a bit in the team’s loss to Ben Lippen last Friday but still found ways to make contributions, scoring seven points, four rebounds, three assists and a steal.

This season Sundell is averaging 12 points per game in a balanced Northside Chrisitan offense. The senior contributes on both ends of the floor and leads the teams in steals and assists per game,  with four and three respectively.

Gilbert girls basketball player Ahleria Leaphart won athlete of the week honors after a second consecutive big time performance against Pelion.

In the first game against the Panthers Leaphart recorded a near triple-double with 25 points, nine assists and 10 steals. In the second, she was not as productive but still put up impressive numbers and scored 19 points, three rebounds, three assists and nine steals.

The Indians were blown out in their game against Greenwood last week, losing 51-5. Leaphart was the only Gilbert player to make a field goal, scoring four of the team’s points and adding three rebounds.

Leaphart’s senior campaign has gotten off to a fast start. The guard is leading the team in both points, with 15 per game, and steals with six per contest.
