GMS student wins essay contest

Middle school students in Lexington School District 1 were invited by the Sertoma Club of Lexington to enter the annual National Heritage Essay contest.

This year the topic was “What Does America Mean to Me?” Over 200 middle school students submitted essays. A committee of club members selected the best of the best and those students were honored at the annual banquet.

Congratulations to Gilbert Middle School student James Lever who was one of the winners.

Congratulations to the GMS Archery Team, which placed third in the International Bowhunting Organization (IBO) and first in bullseye in the state tournament. Their success makes them the South Carolina State Champions.

Cherokee Presbyterian Church in Gilbert invites the community to its annual Easter Carnival and Egg Hunt. This will be held April 7 at 4 pm. Prior to the egg hunt, children will enjoy games, face painting, a bouncy house, and live music. The Easter Egg hunt begins at 5:30 pm. Children are asked to bring Easter baskets to gather the eggs. Visitors will be entered into a prize drawing. The church is at 3622 Augusta Highway in Gilbert.

Gilbert Scout Pack 60 invites the community to its annual Pinewood Derby April

6. at the Gilbert Primary School cafeteria, 9 am until noon. The Scouts have spent weeks preparing their cars for this race.

FFA students have begun their annual plant sale. FFA students grow the plants in a green house at GHS as part of their curriculum. There are a variety of items to choose from including flats, hanging baskets, perennials, vegetables, and more. FFA teacher Derrick Cooper is the contact information for the FFA plant sales. He advises everyone to come early for the best selections. For information call 821-1871.

Beulah United Methodist Church invites seniors in the community to its monthly Fun, Food and Fellowship luncheon. Seniors will enjoy a morning of games, activities and a delicious lunch with their friends. This event is April 11 at 10:30 am. The church is at 161 Beulah Road in Gilbert. No reservations are needed.
