There were mixed results on the field for SCISA teams WW King Academy and Northside Christian in its respective season openers.

WW King Academy won its “Battle of the Knights” matchup with Faith Christian Academy. John Roy scored 2 touchdowns, had both 2-point conversions and finished with 130 yards in the 16-8 victory.

Defensively, Clayton Turner had 22 tackles, 16 solo, and Drake Amick had the gameclinching 4th down tackle.

It was the 1st season-opening win for WW King Academy, the year it reached the SCISA 8-man title game.

Up next for the Knights is a trip to Estill to face Patrick Henry. Head coach Zach Matthews believes his team is prepared for the rigors of a road game.

“They’re really focused and I see it every day at practice, so they can turn that over into the game,” he said.

Meanwhile, the current 8-man champions visited Palmetto State Armory Field to face the Crusaders. Andrew Jackson Academy jumped out to a 18-0 lead, only to have Northside Christian answer back with 16 unanswered points before halftime.

Max McKenna found Charlie Compton for a 61-yard touchdown pass and 2-point conversion.

Luke Cochran then returned a botched punt 78 yards for a score and caught the 2-point conversion pass from McKenna.

The Warriors outscored the Northside Christian 30-0 in the 2nd half for the 48-16 victory.

McKenna finished 10-19 passing for 124 yards and 9 tackles and cornerback Jake Daniels had a teamhigh 13 tackles.

Northside Christian will have to wait 2 weeks to return to action. With Newberry Academy not fielding a team this year, Friday’s road game is cancelled.

It will face Conway Christian Sept. 11 in Conway, then return for

2 straight home games.
