A 16-year-old Brookland-Cayce High School student was taken into custody on Tuesday after a handgun was found in their backpack.

The weapon was discovered during an investigation into stolen property at the school.

After locating the weapon, school administrators immediately notified the School Resource Officer and turned over the weapon.

The Cayce Department of Public Safety reported that no threats were made against any students or faculty.

The student was cooperative with school administrators as well as the School Resource Officer during the incident.

The student was taken into custody immediately and transported to SCDJJ.

The student has been suspended from school pending a disciplinary hearing, according to District 2 Public Information Officer Dawn Kujawa. The student’s name will not be released due to his age.
