Honor the Salvation Army Lassies

Did you have your doughnut Friday? It was National Doughnut Day.

The day has more substance than the powdered sugar or yummy glaze.

On the 1st Friday in June, the day honors the Salvation Army Lassies who served doughnuts to soldiers during WWI.

In 1917, the original Salvation Army Doughnut was served by the Salvation Army Lassies at the front lines in Europe. Home-cooked food from these brave volunteers boosted morale.

The doughnuts were often cooked in oil in the soldiers’ metal helmets and infantrymen were called “doughboys.”

The Salvation Army created National Doughnut Day in 1938 to honor the Lassies and raise money for Chicago’s Salvation Army to help in the Great Depression.
