South Carolina is among the big spenders but a safe state for fireworks.
To find which states report the most firework spending and injuries, Allegiant Fire Protection analyzed Google search trends and found:
• South Carolina was 3rd highest in the nation, spending $36.5 million on fireworks last year, but among the lowest in injuries with an increase of only 12.16%.
• Midwestern states took the top 5 in injuries with South Dakota #1.
Residents searched for burn-related terms just over 2,600 times each month last year but that increased 26% to 3,306 in June - August.
• Nebraska was 2nd with burn-related searches increasing by 23.65%. It was followed by Wisconsin (21.62%), Iowa (21.41%), and Michigan (21.02%).
• Hawaii had the least firework-related injuries with just a 5% increase in the summer followed by Alaska (6%), Louisiana (8.29%), Mississippi (8.43%), and Florida (10%).
Fireworks are a billion dollar business, expected to hit $2.8 billion by 2025.
From January 2020 to March 2021, the value of fireworks imports were over $400 million or $1,232 per 1,000 residents.
To avoid state populations affecting the ranking, the researchers took populations into account.
• Missouri spent the most at $71.4 million – $11,706 per 1,000 residents.
• Kansas was 2nd with $20.5 million – just over $7,000 per 1,000 residents.
• South Carolina was 3rd at $6,474 per 1,000 residents, South Dakota 4th at $6,249 per 1,000 and Alabama 5th at $5,680.
