Employment looks up

200 initial Lexington County initial unemployment claims were filed for the week ending May 1.

That compares with 588 claims in Greenville County, 427 in Richland County, 365 in Spartanburg County, 262 in Horry County, 234 in Anderson County and 225 in Charleston County.

Initial claims in SC fell by 151 from the previous week.

A new work search requirement may be a reason.

The SC Department of Employment and Workforce worked with claimants who did not complete 2 work searches.

If claimants’ benefits were stopped because their work searches did not show up in the MyBenefits portal, claimants will need to speak with someone in an SC Works center.

May 5 marked the federal deadline for Pandemic Unemployment Assistance documentation showing proof of employment, self-employment or planned employment.

Nationally, initial claims dropped by 92,000 to 498,000, the lowest total since 256,000 claims were filed for the week of March 14, 2020.

New national position

Town of Lexington Councilmember Ron Williams has been appointed to the National League of Cities (NLC) Council on Youth, Education and Families for 2021.

Williams was appointed by NLC President and fellow Town of Lexington Councilmember Kathy Maness.

The Council oversees and supports work of the National League of Cities Institute for Youth, Education and Families.

This year, the Council will be co-chaired by Mayor Rosalynn Bliss, of Grand Rapids, Michigan, and Mayor Melvin Carter, of Saint Paul, Minnesota.

Councilmember Tameika Isaac Devine, of Columbia, will serve as Board Representative.

$5,000 scholarship winner

The Lexington Chamber and Visitors Center awarded Gilbert High School graduate Logan Gunter its $5,000 Doris Burkett Scholarship.

The Doris Burkett Scholarship is given to a Lexington School District 1 student who will be attending either a 4-year college or university or technical college.

Gunter will be attending The College of Charleston where she will major in biochemistry. She plans to pursue a master’s degree in education and return to Lexington to teach science at the secondary level.

Lexington School District 2 has named Brian Chatman as the new Chief Operations Officer for the district.

Chatman, who currently serves as director of administration for Saluda County Schools, will succeed Don Icenhower, who previously announced his retirement at the end of the current school year.

Chatman’s appointment was approved during a special session of the Lexington 2 Board of Trustees May 5.

Prior to his current role in Saluda County Schools, Chatman served as director of student services and hearing officer for the district, an assistant principal at high schools in Richland 1, Orangeburg County School District 5, Aiken County Schools and Lexington-Richland 5.
