Here’s more about where those sayings come from.
• A cat nap is an expression for a short nap.
This phrase is easy to figure out. It comes from the fact that cats always seem to be sleeping, and sometimes not for very long — 5 or 10 minutes here or there.
• A 3 dog night is an expression for it’s really cold. This phrase is said to come from the Australian outback where days can be hot but nights cold. When it’s a 3 dog night, you need 3 dogs in bed to keep you warm.
Since the lady of our house has only Gypsy and me, she says her husband is her 3rd dog. He agrees.
• Curiosity killed the cat is an expression to be wary of the dangers of unnecessary investigation or experimentation.
Despite cats having 9 lives, they get into mischief quite often. This phrase notes that if you’re sneaky and snoop a lot, there could be consequences.
Thank goodness we don’t have any of those creatures in our house any more. They are the most stuck up and conceited things.
