Johnson leads Ryder Cup win

Team USA won the Ryder third in the WSCGA JGF Cup and Dutch Fork graduate Dustin Johnson was 1 of the stars.

At 37, Johnson was the oldest team member on Team USA. He was completely dominant in winning all of his matchups.

On a local golf note, Robin Alley, 65, recently won the South Carolina Super Seniors Open. He shot 77 in the first round and closed with a 69 in the final round.

This is Alley‘s best golf performance and highest achievement to date. The Irmo High School and Clemson graduate started out his career in the golf business. After a short stint, Alley went back to school to get a law degree.

Alley gives credit to his fitness program for his recent success.

“I can turn now,” he said with a smile. “I have no low back pain. I seem to have more energy, stamina, and feel stronger as the round goes on. Carrying around 30 extra pounds made me tired.

“For some time, I have been trying to focus on simple things like just playing 1 shot at a time when playing. When practicing, I focus 1st on short shots, lots of putting, chipping, then 30 to 60 yards shots.”

Alley birdied 3,4,5 and 6 in the final round on the way to his closing 69.

The Orangeburg Country Club hosted an event where Burke Cromer, head golf professional at Northwoods Golf Club, won the South Carolina Senior Open Championship division.

In local high school golf competition, defending Class 3A girls’ golf champion Gilbert High School placed Foundation Invitational.

Kennedy Goodwin led the team with a score of 159. Her Lady Indian teammates included Alexis Hodge, Meredith Price and Edie Rainee Hardee.

Blythewood won the event. Chapin placed 4th and Lexington was 7th.

A preview of the Lexington girls’ golf team will come next week.

“We’re kind of in a rebuilding year,” said Coach Brandon Smith. “We lost 2 seniors who will be starting for their respective college teams (Karlee Vardas at Georgia Southern and Emily Beiers at Lander), but we also lost sisters Molly and Ellie Hardwick who moved to Nashville. Molly Hardwick just committed to Ole Miss, the defending national champions.”

More next week on the Lexington Wildcats, so tune in.
