Keep those coffee grounds

Last week we learned how drinking coffee can benefit your health.

Did you know you can use your coffee grounds, too?

To get the best use of your grounds:

• Set out bowls of coffee grounds for pest control. This will deter mosquitoes, fruit flies, beetles and more.

• Free fertilizer. Place grounds in your soil when planting. This gives plants minerals they normally don’t get.

It also attracts worms which helps your garden, too.

• Keep pests off your pets. Rub coffee grounds through their fur while shampooing. Fleas don’t like coffee at all.

• Use as a natural cleaner. Scour your sinks, polish cookware and even clean your grill.

• Exfoliant for your skin. Mix coffee grounds with coconut oil or honey and rub from head to toe. This removes dead skin cells, dirt and helps increase blood flow.

You can also do this to an area of cellulite for 10 minutes to help reduce the appearance.

• Help clean ashes from your fireplace. Place coffee grounds on top of ashes. This helps weigh down the ashes for easier removal.

• Tenderize meats. Add coffee grounds to your dry rub. Put on meat 2 hours prior to cooking. This helps make the crust crispier, and gives a natural flavor.

• Studies have found that caffeine helps with hair growth. Place some coffee grounds in your shampoo and massage into your scalp. Rinse as normal.

• Neutralize odors. Place coffee grounds in old socks or pantyhose. Place anywhere where deodorizing is needed, even in shoes!

Who knew something we normally throw away could be so useful?

Next week: Do you have anxiety?
