Lake home prices rising

A limited number of homes for sale are driving up prices, particularly on Lake Murray.

According to Carl Vollmer of Coldwell Banker, a 4-bedroom home on Davidson Road went for $850,000, and a 4-bedroom home on Bundrick Road for $910,000.

Vollmer reported listings of a 3-bedroom home on Brady Porth Road for $999,999, a 4-bedroom home on Rudder Court for $1,549,000 and a 4-bedroom home on Captains Watch for $3,000,000.

Hospital land purchase

Lexington Medical Center has purchased 7 acres of land in Lexington County.

The lot is located off Platt Springs Road near White Knoll High School.

“We purchased that land in anticipation of possibly needing it in the future as Lexington County continues to grow,” said LMC’s Jennifer Wilson.

Wilson said LMC currently has no specific plans for the land.

Fuddruckers closed

The long-standing Fuddruckers restaurant on Bush River Road has closed.

After 35 years, owner Bill Teague announced he could no long afford to operate the business, Cola Daily’s Karamie Sullivan reported.

Teague thanked his employees and regular customers for their loyal patronage.

No plans have been announced for the building at 1801 Bush River Road. Lexington County tax records show the 1.77 acre property was purchased for 600,000 in 2003.

Cayce planning meeting

The City of Cayce is once again asking for public input.

The city will hold its 2nd session for Cayce residents and businesses to provide thoughts on the 2020 Cayce Comprehensive Plan.

Local governments are required by law to prepare a Comprehensive Plan every 10 years that outlines a long-range vision for growth.

The meeting will be Feb. 25 from 6-8 pm at the Lexington 2 Innovation Center, located at 509 Bulldog Blvd. next to Cayce Elementary School.

Presentation will start promptly at 6:30 with public input to follow. Light refreshments and non-alcoholic beverages will be served.

Peanut butter drive

Harvest Hope is looking to collect 1,000 jars of peanut butter by the end of February.

Peanut butter is one of the most frequently requested items by food banks because it is kid-friendly, shelf-stable, and protein-rich.

Drop off plastic jars of peanut butter at:

• Harvest Hope Food Bank, 2220 Shop Rd., Columbia

Donations can be made through Harvest Hope’s Amazon Wishlist and online at www.donate.harvesthope.org . A $15 donation can provide 12 jars of peanut butter.

Calling all writers

The 2020 South Carolina Novel Prize is now open for submissions.

The biennial contest is sponsored by the South Carolina Arts Commission, the College of Charleston Master of Fine Arts in Creative Writing program, SC State Library, SC Humanities, and Hub City Press.

This year’s competition will be judged by Stephanie Powell Watts, author of No One Is Coming to Save Us, and We Are Taking Only What We Need.

The South Carolina Novel Prize is open to any South Carolina writer, published or not.

The winning author will receive a book contract with Hub City Press,in Spartanburg.

Submissions are open through Mar. 15 at https://hubcity.submittable.com/submit .

Bring your recycling

Riverbanks Zoo and Garden is hosting a free recycling drop-off for Lexington and Richland County residents.

The 2nd annual Wild About Recycling event is Saturday, Feb. 29.

Accepted items will include electronics, paper to shred, scrap metals, tires, used cooking oils and Goodwill donations. Materials from businesses will not be accepted.

Cell phones and other mobile devices will be recycled as part of ECO-CELL’s Gorillas on the Line. Coltan is a mineral found in cell phones and other small electronics that is mined from areas where endangered gorillas live.

Vehicles should enter the drop-off area from Greystone Boulevard and proceed to Rivermont Drive. Volunteers will be on hand to assist with traffic flow.

Chamber gets 4 stars

The Lexington Chamber and Visitors Center is now nationally accredited.

The United States Chamber of Commerce awarded the chamber a 4-Star Accreditation for its sound policies, effective organizational procedures, and positive impact on the community.

In order to receive accreditation, a chamber must meet minimum standards in their operations and programs, including areas of governance, government affairs, and technology.

“This designation from the U.S. Chamber shows that this Chamber is continuing to create opportunities for businesses of all sizes through its work in our community,” said Otis Rawl, Lexington Chamber President and CEO.

Become a gardening master

Lexington County Master Gardeners Association will host the 2020 SC Garden Jamboree Friday, April 3 at Saluda Shoals Park, 5605 Old Bush River Road.

The event is from 8:15 am – 3:30 pm. Key Note speakers are Amanda McNulty, host of ETV’s “Making It Grow” and Vanessa Driscoll Bialobreski, creator of Farm to Table Productions, Management and Catering which works with local chefs and farmers.

This program will be inspiring to everyone who enjoys gardening, crafting and nature. Lunch will be provided.
