Lexington County teachers may get a raise.
Judges, too, but not as much as they expected.
The $9 billion spending plan South Carolina senators are debating this week is a 4% pay raise for teachers, gives state employees a $600 bonus, and reduces judges’ salary increases.
Teachers asked for more, but the Senate Finance Committee plans $159 million to increase their pay 4%, according to the Charleston Post and Courier.
Teachers with fewer than 5 years may get up to 10%.
State employees earning less than $70,000 would receive a $600 bonus and 2% cost-of-living increase.
Employees earning more than $100,000 don’t qualify.
Judges would get 15% rather than 33%.
Chief Justice Don Be-atty’s salary would rise to $179,550 from $156,200.
The Senate would send $65 million to high-poverty school districts.
The Commerce Department will get $50 million to recruit business for the poorest school districts for water and sewer infrastructure or building schools.
The legislative session ends May 9.
