Lexington County Sheriff’s Department Reports Intercept of Drugs Meant for Inmates

Posted

The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department says two people attempted to get drugs and other contraband to inmates inside the county Detention Center.

Cassandra Shanklin, 48, and Hunter James Warren, 23, are the alleged culprits, charged with “furnishing or possessing contraband in a county jail, criminal conspiracy, possession with intent to distribute marijuana, possession with intent to distribute methamphetamine, and possession with the intent to distribute a Schedule III substance,” per a press release from the department.

The release alleges the pair were trying to get the illicit items to Shanklin’s son and another inmate. According to Sheriff Jay Koon, deputies intercepted a package containing meth, marijuana and pills before the inmates could retrieve it.

“Our crime reduction unit received a tip about Shanklin planning to get drugs and banned items into the jail,” Koon is quoted in the release. “We set up surveillance operations and eventually saw Shanklin and Warren leaving the contraband near a perimeter area of the jail where inmates have some access Oct. 9.”

Per the sheriff, Shanklin was arrested after the department executed a search warrant at her house Oct. 13. Warren was arrested Oct. 19 on a parole violation and the contraband charges. The two inmates — Shanklin’s son, Joshua, and Donny Zimbro — were charged with furnishing or possessing contraband in a jail as well as criminal conspiracy.

According to the release, Warren, Joshua Shanklin and Zimbro are being held in the Lexington County Detention Center. Cassandra Shanklin was released after meeting the conditions of her bond.
