Lexington loses YMCA Family Center

Sorry to hear about the Lexington YMCA Family Center closing. My wife and I have been living in Lexington for the past 19 years. We had no idea where it is. I read that the Y was established years ago but obviously well enough away from the expanding town of Lexington. In our former home in Greenwood, the local Y was the place to be when we were younger, as it is now for young people. Lexington has a lot of for-profit gyms and franchised youth sports programs. Don’t tell me that a new Y, located and easily accessible on a main thoroughfare in the town of Lexington, would not be well attended and supported by today’s ever expanding populace. It’s time to rethink denying our community a new Y with gyms, meeting rooms, swimming pool, exercise rooms and equipment and athletic fields, as well as the organized sports and self improvement programs the YMCA offers.

Charles Gailey, Lexington

Editor’s note: We appreciate Mr. Gailey’s concern. The YMCA Family Center was an asset to our community. The Lexington County Recreation Commission’s Leisure Centers provide most of the amenities he mentions in his letter.
