Lexington Medical Center, MUSC Announce Cancer Research Partnership

Posted

A new partnership will reportedly open up more than 200 clinical cancer trials to local patients.

The clinical research and education association between Lexington Medical Cancer Center and MUSC Hollings Cancer Center in Charleston is the second high-profile partnership Lexington Medical Center and MUSC Health have unveiled this month.

The two providers previously unveiled a collaboration between them, Alliance for a Healthier SC, the S.C. Hospital Association and the state Department of Health and Environmental Control to conduct a Community Health Needs Assessment to identify the health care priorities of Midlands residents.

Lexington Medical trumpeted the potential benefits of the cancer partnership in a press release.

“This partnership will provide Lexington Medical Center patients access to MUSC’s National Cancer Institute-designated clinical trials and continue to ensure they receive high quality and comprehensive cancer services,” the release states.

"Through this affiliation, Lexington Medical Cancer Center will work collaboratively with MUSC to advance the expertise of clinical staff and offer the latest in cancer treatment research.  Specifically, the affiliation with MUSC Hollings Cancer Center will allow Lexington Medical Center’s patients access to more than 200 clinical trials, providing patients in the Midlands a wide range of the most promising cancer treatments currently available in the nation.”

According to the release, the Hollings Cancer Center, one of 71 National Cancer Institute-designated cancer centers, has more than 120 scientists working to find better ways to prevent, detect, diagnose and treat cancer.

“As the Midlands’ only hospital providing comprehensive cancer care, we are excited about the benefits our affiliation with MUSC Hollings Cancer Center brings to our patients,” Dr. Quillin Davis, medical director of cancer services at Lexington Medical Center, is quoted. “Having access to their National Cancer Institute-designated clinical trials and research expertise will allow our patients to receive the latest, most innovative treatment while staying here in their community.”

“MUSC Hollings Cancer Center is committed to improving the care of cancer patients across our state,” David Zaas, MUSC Health Charleston Division CEO, is quoted. “We are excited to partner with Lexington Medical Center to help ensure patients can access innovative clinical research trials and new approaches to care, including state of the art therapies closer to home.”
