Lexington players win Athlete of the Week after advancing to state championships

Posted

The baseball and softball seasons are at their end and this week’s Athlete of the Week winners are making the most of their final opportunities on the diamond.

This week, a pair of Lexington players claimed the honors after big performances in the state semifinal, which helped their teams advance to the 5A championship series.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek.

Ryder Kellis

Ryder Kellis had a big game against Dorman last week in the upper state championship.

Kellis went 2-3 from the plate and blasted a solo shot to left field to score the first run in the game. He finished with two runs in the game, scoring off a home run from his teammate, Lincoln Hill.

The hits Kellis recorded snapped a two-game hitless streak for the batter. His recovery couldn’t have come at a better time for Lexington, which needed his contributions to beat Dorman.

Lexington has not lost a game yet in these playoffs. Kellis and the team will look to carry their momentum into the championship series that started this week.

Gracie Scott

Gracie Scott helped the Lexington softball team advance to the state championship series.

Scott went 2-3 and brought in three RBIs for the Wildcats in their second win over Byrnes. That victory moved Lexington into the championship series.

The senior put the first points on the board for Lexington, striking on an RBI single in the second inning. The Wildcats needed that early run to build confidence after being shutout by Byrnes in the previous match.

Scott will look to end her Lexington career on a high note this week and help the team win its first state title since 2019.
