The high school sports season has wrapped up following the conclusion of the SCHSL baseball and softball championships.

This week’s Athlete of the Week winners helped their team secure a title and end the season as the best in the state.

Will Burgess

Lexington baseball star Will Burgess helped the Wildcats capture their first championship in over a decade.

The College of Charleston commit earned an RBI after doubling in the fifth inning to tie the match in the deciding game against Ashley Ridge. His hit opened things up for Lexington, who put two more runs on the board to seal the deal.

Burgess’ Lexington career ended on a win, something most players can’t claim. The senior was a major part of this championship run, leading off for Lexington throughout the postseason.

Peyton Hendrix

Gray softball’s Peyton Hendrix was on the mound for the War Eagles when they wrapped up the 2A state softball championship.

Hendrix saw action in both games of the championship series against Marion. She pitched a complete game in game one, throwing 10 strikeouts, while giving up just one run, one walk and nine hits. In game two, she threw three innings and earned the win after pitching three strikeouts, while only giving up two hits and two runs.

The freshman has been a star on the mound for the War Eagles this season. She set a program record for most strikeouts in a year with 124 in 77 innings. But her contributions don’t end on the mound.

Hendrix was also effective from the plate. In the title series, she recorded two hits, three runs and an RBI.
