Lexington’s newest centenarian

Clay Kulp, a long time resident at Deepwoods Estates has reached a milestone that few of us are likely to duplicate.

He is turning 100 years old.

Kulp was born in Richmond, Virginia, and eventually ended up in Columbia.

Along the way he worked for a railroad building bridges and served in the Coast Guard from 1942-1947 where he was trained as a radio and electronics technician.

He helped dismantle a POW camp near Myrtle Beach AF Base.

After his service days, he found a job with the SC Department of Motor Vehicles where he worked on transmission towers all over the state. He often carried along his son Will.

He has been a long-time member of First Baptist Church in Columbia and is a big Gamecock fan.

Kulp is also quite creative. When a 1000 piece puzzle he was working on had one piece missing, he took a piece from another puzzle and created the piece he was missing.

Happy 100th birthday, Clay!
