Light Up the Night

On Oct. 28, Lexington Baptist Church will host the annual outdoor event Light Up the Night.

It’s for kids of all ages in and around Lexington to come for a free night of candy, games, rides and fun.

For most of man’s existence on earth, when nighttime came, human activity shut down.

Before electricity, the ability to light the night was very meager at best.

A full moon with a cloudless sky was the best possible night illumination for thousands of years.

The use of street lighting was first recorded in the city of Antioch in the 4th century B.C.

The Dark Ages from the 5th to the 14th century were dark in more ways than one!

In 1757, Benjamin Franklin invented street lamps in Philadelphia.

He put candles inside a square case with four glass panes, so the wind would not blow the candle out.

In 1792, Britain began using gas lamps to light the way.

After Thomas Edison invented the electric light bulb, Cleveland became the first city with a lighted public square in 1879.

The amount of energy the earth now produces at night is staggering.

Satellite images of the earth at night reveal the light of thousands of cities around the globe.

Yet, most of the world is still in the dark when it comes to understanding what Jesus meant when He said, “I am the light of the world.”

We all learned the children’s song, “This little light of mine, I’m gonna let it shine.”

Many people live in a world of constant darkness.

Many senior adults struggle to see their way in the darkness of loneliness, despair. and sadness.

You might also know the song, “Brighten the corner where you are.”

It really doesn’t take much effort for you and me to shine a light of hope and encouragement for someone who is stumbling in the dark.

Have you ever wondered why God made our teeth white?

Your smile can help light up someone else’s night!
