Liverpool and Manchester United, two of the world’s most popular soccer teams, met under the rainy night sky of Williams-Brice Stadium last weekend for a historic English Premier League preseason friendly. Liverpool won 3-0.

It was the first time the state of South Carolina hosted a premier league event. Liverpool dominated on the scoreboard, despite taking half as many shot attempts as United did. Liverpool finished its opportunities, while United struggled to hit its target and failed to register a goal.

“They played well,” Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag said. “They took their chances. And we also, as you say, we created good chances, but we couldn’t finish.”

Manchester United took 18 shots with eight on goal. Liverpool took nine shots all game with five on goal. Ten Hag said part of his team’s struggles was fatigue after a long road trip and rainy Columbia weather.

“12, 13 days, in the rain, in the end, it’s a tough game,” ten Hag said. “You miss the freshness and over-fuel to have the power to finish clean.”

Liverpool won the game but this match was just a friendly scrimmage. This contest between the two English rivals does not count toward their records, but pride was still on the line.

Liverpool scored its first goal in the tenth minute after Diogo Jota fired a pass to Fábio Carvalho for a left-footed shot from the center of the box to the bottom right corner of the goal. This was Carvalho’s second goal in the past two games.

Manchester United got two looks at evening the score in the twelfth minute, but the first shot was saved by goalie Caoimhín Kelleher and the rebound attempt was off target.

Liverpool scored its second goal 15 minutes later when Curtis Jones took a shot right in front of the net off a Mohamed Salah cross.

United had some of its best looks at goal during the first half, but Kelleher denied all four Manchester shots that came near the goal. Vitezslav Jaros subbed onto the pitch in the second half for Liverpool and also earned four saves to send Manchester back to England scoreless in South Carolina.

The final Liverpool goal came in the second half during the 61st minute after Kostas Tsimikas took a shot from close to the bottom left corner.

Despite the shutout loss, ten Hag said he was not worried about his team’s future performances.

“I would be concerned if we didn’t create chances,” he said. “I’m pleased with the way we created chances out of open play, but also from good pressing situations or counterplay situations.”

This match was the final U.S. game for both teams this preseason. United previously played two games in California, and Liverpool is coming off two games in Pennsylvania.

Both teams have one more preseason contest before the EPL regular season kicks off on Aug. 16 with a match between Manchester United and Fulham. Liverpool’s season begins Aug. 17 on the road against Ipswich Town.
