Living alone? Be careful

Senior Living

An 82-year-old senior adult lady in our church lives by herself. She lives is in a safe Lexington neighborhood of small patio homes. A couple weeks ago she was taking groceries into the house when she fell in the garage and could not get up. She could not reach her cell phone in her pocketbook on the other side of the car. She tried calling out for help but to no avail. Although family and neighbors live nearby, no one heard her. She lay helpless in the dark on the garage floor all night. Morning came and she prayed, but no one found her. She could hear her phone ring in the house, but she could not answer it. Another day went by as she prayed that God would not let her die in her garage. As the heat was getting to her, she tried to fan herself with a paper bag. She spent another night on the garage floor, dehydrated as she had nothing to drink. Finally on Sunday, her daughter found her and called an ambulance. This story has a happy ending. This sweet lady is OK and back in her home. She and I wanted to let you read about this in hopes that it might help prevent someone else from having a similar experience. She now wears a medical alert lifeline device on her wrist and has several alert buttons around her house. Most importantly, her family members are calling her every day to check on her. If you live alone, please make sure that someone checks with you every day. It could save your life.

Next week: Where do you get your strength?
