Alison Rauch plans to climb Sassafras Mountain, South Carolina’s tallest. In the Trailblaze Challenge 2.0, she must complete the first hike to do the second. It’s harder with 2,500 more feet elevation and limited to 30 hikers. “We’ll start on a pontoon to the Cane Brake Access, hike over the highest point in South Carolina and end at Table Rock State Park,” said the White Knoll High and Winthrop University grad who now lives in Greer. “Lexington County is where I first learned to love the outdoors,” she said. “From Girl Scout retreats at Camp Congaree, soccer at the Gibson Road Soccer Complex or marching in the White Knoll marching band, I was always outside. “I fondly remember Virginia Hylton Park, Gibson Pond Park and walking the Lake Murray dam. “Throughout my life, I’ve given back in some capacity through Relay for Life, Lions Club or picking up trash. “I love the feeling of knowing you make a difference in a community. Alison became involved with Make-A-Wish as a TV reporter in Rock Hill. She emceed a Walk for Wishes event and fell in love with helping children with critical illnesses. The 28.3-mile hike can simulate what a family experiences with the highs and lows of the trail and their medical journey. “I’m grateful for growing up with great outdoor opportunities and thankful to be healthy enough to make a difference for families in South Carolina.”
