Love letters on Valentine’s Day

My wife and I will celebrate our 40th anniversary in June. I found a shoebox last week that my wife has saved for about 44 years from the time we started dating. It is filled with all of my love letters to her.

I was shocked to see that I actually wrote that many letters to her. And do you think I saved any of her letters to me? Why would I?

I read them when I got them and understood perfectly what she said. Why would I need to re-read them? It’s not like the words were going to change.

OK, I’m a guy! Looking back on it now, however, I sort of wish I could read her words again.

I know she loves me, but I think it would be nice to re-live those moments in time with her through her letters.

That is what it is like to read, re-read, and read again the Bible. It is God’s love letter to those who belong to Him.

Those who do not love the Lord with all their heart and soul are not particularly moved by reading the Bible.

They are reading somebody else’s mail.

Valentine’s Day today is observed in many countries around the world.

It is a day when couples express their love to each other with a gift or a card, preferably with some personal words and not just a signature.

If there is no exchange of sentiment or expression of love, it is only one-sided. The result can be heart-breaking.

God wrote us His love letter in the Bible. He longs to hear our response to Him for what He has done for us.

This reminds me of a popular song, Written in Red. It began, “In letters of crimson, God wrote His love on a hillside so long, long ago; For you and for me Jesus died, and love’s greatest story was told. I love you—that’s what Calvary said. I love you—written in red.”
