AROUND CAYCE, SPRINGDALE & WEST COLUMBIA

Did you see lots of first responders on the bridges in West Columbia and Cayce?

It’s believed that a man jumped from the Gervais Street Bridge in West Columbia last Wednesday morning. The Gervais Street Bridge was closed for a few hours, and so was the Blossom Street Bridge over the Congaree River, in Cayce.

“A man jumped off the bridge, that’s all we know,” said West Columbia Assistant Police Chief Scott Morrison. The blocked-off bridges resulted in long lines of traffic in Cayce and West Columbia. Some motorists detoured to the Jarvis Klapman Bridge.

Units from West Columbia and Cayce, fire and police were on the scene. A SLED helicopter, along with the SC Department of Natural Resources were aided in the search. The man had been found by Sunday.

Drive-thru has taken on a new meaning in Cayce.

The SC Highway Patrol was chasing a man in his truck last Thursday morning and the pursuit ended in a crash into the Cayce Waffle House on Airport Boulevard.

According to the SCHP a truck drove past a trooper on I-26 at a high rate of speed. The suspect left the interstate at exit

113. He then attempted to pull his car into the Waffle House parking lot. Instead, the vehicle ran directly into the side of the building.

Gregory Alexander Maxwell, 27, was charged with DUI, failure to stop for a blue light, and driving while uninsured. He was taken to the Lexington County Detention Center. According to the Cayce Department of Public Safety, there were no injuries.

Some broken parts of the building were-on the restaurant’s floor, but the Waffle House stayed open through it all.

West Columbia Economic Development Director BJ Unthank and IT Director/Public Information Officer Anna Huffman have graduated from Leadership Lexington County.
