New covid variant discovered

Delta strain believed more transmissible

Posted

Just when we thought we had covid conquered, a new variant has been found.

Health officials say the Delta variant raises fears that the strain may cause a wave of infection that overwhelms health care systems, reverses reopenings and undermines vaccine rollouts.

The B.1.617.2 strain, officially known as the Delta variant, now accounts for more than 6% of virus samples in the US, according to the US Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

That might seem small but, the speed of its growth is worrying. A month ago, the strain accounted for just over 1% of virus samples, according to the CDC.

Experts believe Delta is likely more transmissible.

The strain is 40% more transmissible than the dominant Alpha variant, which was already more transmissible compared to the original strain of the virus.

Early evidence suggests the Delta variant could cause an increased risk of hospitalization in comparison to the Alpha strain.

If you or someone you love has covid-like symptoms, please check with your doctor.
