B-L councilman arrested

Batesburg-Leesville Councilman Steve Cain was arrested last Wednesday. The council-member was again jailed for failure to pay child support. Cain previously served 45 days in jail for failing to pay court-ordered child support in 2013. At the time of his 2013 arrest, he was $15,700 behind in payments

LHS student struck by vehicle on school grounds

A Lexington High School student was left in serious but stable condition after being struck by a vehicle on school grounds at Lexington High School early Mar. 13. Emergency response units were dispatched to Lexington High School just after 8:15 am following the incident. Upon arrival, Lexington County firefighters and EMS units began providing immediate emergency medical care to the student before transporting them to a local hospital. The student was crossing a parking lot when they were hit by a truck, said a District 1 spokesperson. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is investigating the incident.

Irmo fire victim identified

An Irmo man died in a structure fire early last Thursday morning. Joel Edward Ferris, 69, died in his home on Waterwood Drive in Ir-mo around 3 am Mar. 14, according to Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher. Another occupant of the residence was transported to an area hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. An investigation by the Irmo Police Department is ongoing.

Irmo orthodontist found dead

A local orthodontist and one time contestant on CBS’ “The Amazing Race” has died. James Wesley Raman, 42, was an orthodontist at Irmo Smiles. His wife Misti Raman is also a dentist at Irmo Smiles. The couple appeared on “The Amazing Race” in 2014, finishing in 2nd place. No cause of death has been released to the public.
