Blowfish are optimistic about the new starting date

The Lexington County Blowfish season was supposed to begin on Thursday, May 28.

However, the corona virus pandemic that has cancelled and postponed numerous events throughout the season has delayed the 2020 Blowfish season.

“Based on following all the guidelines, the Blowfish will play its 15th season of summer collegiate baseball (and 6th season in Lexington County) from the beginning of July til the middle of August,” coowner Bill Shanahan stated in a written statement.

The 2020 season will be a 46-game home and away schedule with 25 being home games at Lexington County Baseball Stadium.

Shanahan made the announcement during a special press conference on the team’s Facebook page. He emphasized the focus on guidelines from local, state, and federal officials will be paramount for Lexington County’s home team this summer.

“The Blowfish organization is looking forward to that day when we can safely open the ballpark for our fans and play baseball, provide family fun & entertainment in a safe environment,” Shanahan said. “It’s all based on our governor, health officials and local guidelines. In no way will we jeopardize the safety of our fans, players, coaches, staff, umpires and vendors.”

Lexington County’s players should be ready to hit the field July 1, as all baseball has been on hold since the early part of March.

The Blowfish are releasing the names of players signed with the team on their social media channels. Among the recent commitments were Aaron Adams.

“Depending on governmental guidance, teams may begin to form in mid-June to prepare for the season and may play some exhibition games in June,” The Coastal Plain League said in a statement. “It is expected that this schedule will allow the league’s teams and host cities to properly prepare to give the fans and the country’s finest collegiate baseball players a safe and enjoyable environment. We look forward to an exciting 2020 season.”
