Old soldiers are really a treat

Ijust interviewed Earl Sanford, a  World War II soldier who served in Germany and was at Hitler’s retreat, the Eagle’s Nest, during his R&R. When he returned home, he became a principal and Bill West. The late Chronicle columnist, was one of his students!  Neat guy!  Mr. Sanford said Bill did behave himself in school!

The fastest train in the United States is the Acela Express and it runs 150 miles an hour.  Japan’s fastest train runs 374 miles an hour.  I would rather not ride either of these. However, I feel like the Christmas season is coming with the speed of Japan’s train and Thanksgiving is just a  quick stop in the race to the holiday craziness called Christmas.

I have a friend who already has her presents wrapped and stacked neatly by the front door.  I’m just trying to get to past this week, and shopping is low on the list of priorities. There are many holiday markets in the Chapin and Irmo area to make shopping easier.

Chapin United Methodist Church’s annual bazaar on November 3, 8-1 pm, offers homemade canned and baked goods, casseroles, soups, and crafts. The Chapin Band Booster Club is having its holiday market November 10, 9 am-3 pm, with more than 75 local crafters, vendors, and food trucks featuring candles, pottery, jewelry, woodworking, and more. The Holiday Open House for Chapin businesses is November 13, 9 am-1 pm. Come and shop locally this Christmas.

District Five is looking for retired individuals to participate in PROJECT LOVE as volunteers, Call 803-345-6181 for more information.

Midterm elections are also coming up November 6 and your vote is essential.  Kids have a school holiday, and if you have a child aged 8-12, they can have a fun day at the Charlotte NASCAR hall of fame. Tracks, tires, car parts, and the inside scoop on racing are just some of the planned events.  This is a hands-on learning trip with the Ir-mo Chapin Recreation Center. Pick up at Crooked Creek is at 7 a.m. and Seven Oaks Park at 7:45 a.m. The cost of the trip is $59. For more information, call 803-345-6181.

We Care in Chapin is in need of food, so the Hewitt foundation is having a Can-a Palooza outdoor worship event to help fill the We Care pantry. It’s November 10 at 3126 Wessinger Road, Chapin, 6-8 pm. The 2017 event raised over 400 pounds of food; they want to bring in over 500 pounds of food in 2018.
