Lexington girl missing

Catalytic converter thieves arrested

2 men were arrested Sunday for stealing a catalytic converter in Lexington.

Chief Terrence Green said the men were caught as they fled from a business 200 block of Swartz Road where they had just stolen a catalytic converter from a vehicle.

Dalton Blake Galloway, 26, of Gilbert, and Jacob Mitchell Hill, 27, of Newberry, were arrested.

Galloway has been charged with driving under suspension, PWID methamphetamine, injury to fixtures to obtain non-ferrous metal, criminal conspiracy, auto tampering, possession of non-ferrous metals in vehicles, and possession of burglary tools.

Hill has been charged with PWID methamphetamine, injury to fixtures to obtain nonferrous metal, criminal conspiracy, auto tampering, and possession of non-ferrous metals in vehicles.

The men were transported to the Lexington County Detention Center where they are waiting a bond hearing.

1 dead in I-77 collision

1 person died following a single-vehicle collision on I-77 near mile marker 1 Sunday.

The SC Highway Patrol said a 2013 Toyota Avalon was traveling north on I-77 when it ran off the left side of the road and struck a tree around 11 am.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said Vernetta Tillman, 73, of Columbia, was pronounced dead at the scene.

An autopsy confirmed Tillman’s death was the result of a natural medical event.

2 killed on 1-26

An elderly couple died Saturday morning while trying to cross I-26 in Lexington County.

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher said the couple died after being struck by a motor vehicle on I-26 westbound near exit 119 shortly before 4 am on February 27, 2021.

Frank James Bates, 64, and Bobbie Jenkins, 70, both of Columbia, were pronounced dead at the scene due to their injuries. The vehicle that the couple had been traveling in had become disabled in the median, and they were walking across the westbound lanes of I-26 when they were struck.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.

Fallen firefighters remembered

The Lexington Firefighter Spring Festival will be held March 20 from 2-7 pm at the Icehouse Amphitheater in Lexington.

The event will raise money for the Jeffrey Vaden Chavis House and feature Tokyo Joe.

On July 12, 2001, Jeff Chavis lost his life as a result of burns he suffered in the line of duty while fighting a residential fire on Lake Murray.

Motorcyclist dies in collision

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher Friday identified the motorcyclist who died in a collision in the 500 block of Boiling Springs Road at approximately 4:50 pm on Wednesday, Feb. 24.

Marvin L. Drawdy, 59, of Lexington, was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Fisher. Drawdy, who was not wearing a helmet, collided with the rear of a van that had slowed to make a turn. The driver of the van was not injured.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision.

3 teens charged in pizza robbery

3 Columbia teens are accused of robbing a pizza delivery man at gunpoint.

Justice Isaiah Martin, 18, is charged with armed robbery, according to an arrest warrant. The names of the other 2 suspects will not be released because they are under the age of 18.

“The driver called 911 after he ran away from the robbery scene and found a neighbor to help him,” Lexington County Sheriff Jay Koon said. “He reported three males approached him as he was making a delivery to a home on Wilton Hill Road. One had a gun and told the victim to empty his pockets.”

Justice was transported to the Lexington County Detention Center. The 2 minors were transported to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice.

Former SCANA CEO pleads guilty

SC Attorney General Alan Wilson said former SCANA CEO Kevin Bryan Marsh pled guilty.

Marsh also pled to a related charge in federal court.

A federal judge said he could get 2 years in prison if he cooperates.

Marsh will pay $5 million under the agreement.

Prison for Irmo drug dealer

Steve Seman Hattar, 57, of Irmo, was sentenced to 19 years in prison on federal drug and firearm charges.

Hattar plead guilty to possessing with intent to distribute methamphetamine and possessing a firearm in furtherance of a drug trafficking crime.

Investigation revealed Hattar had trafficked some 43 kilograms of methamphetamine and one kilogram of heroin. Hattar had previously served a significant sentence for a federal drug crime in another state.
