Pair of Lexington basketball stars win Athlete of the Week

Posted

A duo of Lexington basketball players won Athlete of the Week after leading their team to crucial wins in the second to last week of the regular season.

The Lexington wins kept both their boys and girls teams in contention for the region championship. The boys team clinched the region title with their wins, while the girls remained alive in second place.

Voting for Athlete of the Week runs from 10 a.m. Saturday to 10 a.m. Monday each week at lexingtonchronicle.com/athleteoftheweek.

Jaxon Prunty

Jaxon Prunty was named Athlete of the Week after having a big week for the Wildcats in their wins over River Bluff and White Knoll.

Against River Bluff, Lexington officially earned the region championship for the second year in a row. Prunty’s 19-point performance helped the team claim a 15-point win over the Gators.

Prunty followed that performance up with an even bigger one against White Knoll. He finished with 24 points as the Wildcats won by 13.

The senior has been a consistent scoring threat for Lexington all season and will be a key piece for the Wildcats as they gear up for the playoffs.

Sydni Anderson

Lexington entered the week needing every win possible to keep up with undefeated Dutch Fork in the region championship race.

Sydni Anderson showed up to the team’s game against River Bluff last Tuesday and made sure the  Wildcats left with a win. She led the team with 16 points as Lexington went on to claim a 38-point victory.

Anderson’s 16-point game against River Bluff was her second-highest-scoring performance this season. Her season-high is 19 points, which came against White Knoll on Jan. 16.

The Wildcats defeated White Knoll again last Friday to stay one game behind region leader Dutch Fork. The team has one game left this season, and it is against the Silver Foxes on their own court.
