Pelion police host annual event for kids, community

Pelion is like the Mayberry of Lexington. That’s how Mayor Frank Schumpert describes the small town on the edge of Lexington County at Pelion’s kids festival Sunday afternoon held at the town’s community center.

The kids festival is hosted by the Pelion Police Department and this is its fourth year hosting the annual event. It’s one of its bigger events along with a back-to-school bash they hold closer to the beginning of the school year in conjunction with Eau Claire Health Cooperative.

Pelion Police Chief John Rebolj told the Chronicle it’s an event they want have for the kids and community. With less than a thousand residents, it’s nice to have something for everyone in town, he added.

The event lasted for several hours with games and a bounce house for the kids along with the Pelion police team, Lexington County firefighters and a highway patrol deputy hanging out at the event. Free food was also provided by Schumpert’s IGA which Schumpert also owns. The grocery store has been open for more than 100 years.

Additionally, the Pelion branch of the Lexington County library was also on hand promoting its summer reading series. While the summer kick off already launched, it’s not too late to join the summer program as the branch has a summer schedule packed with activities.
