West Columbia will start construction of an enabling park for all children.

“This park needed to be done for all the citizens of South Carolina,” said Sen. Nikki Setzler.

The park for children of all abilities at 212 Hudson Street, adjacent to the West Columbia Riverwalk is to open in March.

Setzler called Riverwalk “the gem of the Midlands” while advocating the need for more green space and parks.

West Columbia Mayor Bobby Horton said the opportunity for all children to play together is critical.

West Columbia City Council had a vision when the plan for the park was being considered, he said.

“The new park will be a distinctive attraction, that is special for West Columbia. We’re pleased to be able to offer it.”

Councilman Tem Miles said his 3 daughters will be able to go to the park together.

“I have 2 daughters who are not in a wheelchairs” said Miles. “Now parents will not have to choose. Their children can play with their peers. Playing together is how children form bonds.”

Miles said this will “go a long way toward addressing parking needs” near the Riverwalk.

This project is being made possible with the help of the West Columbia Beautification Foundation. It is partially funded by a grant from the Central Carolina Community Foundation via the West Columbia Beautification Foundation. Sen. Setzler and Rep. Micah Caskey helped procure $400,000 from SC Parks and Recreation to help build the park, said Miles.
