In the 1st Lexington 10 Middle School football championship played this past Monday, the Pleasant Hill Cougars took home the championship trophy.
They defeated the Gilbert Middle School Warriors 26-0.
Pleasant Hill dominated the game just as they did their opponents in the regular season, giving up only 6 points all season to finish 8-0.
“It was great,” Cougars’ head coach Matt Hornsby said. “It was just fun watching these kids play that will be playing against each other for the next 3-4 years in high school and I’ve got a special group this year. I’ve been coaching 21 years and this might be the best group of kids and athletes that I had in 21 years.”
The Warriors (6-2) struggled to put drives together against the stifling Cougars defense, going backwards on penalties and negative yardage plays for most of the 1st half.
Running back Jaden Allen-Hendrix gained yardage on some hard fought runs, including breaking a long one early in the 1st quarter to the Cougars’ 18.
The rest of the game was all Pleasant Hill, specifically Jayden Bradford, who scored all 4 Cougar touchdowns. After the game, Hornsby reflected on the team’s undefeated season and winning the 1st Lex 10 championship.
“They’ve worked hard for everything,” Hornsby said. “This has been a special group that I would put up against anyone, I can’t wait to see some of them play for a state championship at Williams-Brice in a few years.”
