Prisma Health has expanded its midwifery care options with a new location in Lexington County.

Prisma Health Midwifery Care - Irmo is located at the Irmo Professional Center on Wellness Boulevard and is set up to offer “full-scope midwifery services,” according to its website.

“This facility is a practice of certified nurse-midwives that focuses on caring for women throughout their lifetime to help them achieve their goals and work with them to make the best individual decisions,” a news release states.

“Prisma Health Midwifery - Irmo is directly linked to Prisma Health hospital systems which provides patients access to appropriate interventions if circumstances should arise that require urgent medical attention as well as access to technology and experts, including maternal-fetal medicine specialists.”

According to the release, other services that will be offered at the new location include prenatal and postpartum care, breastfeeding support, family planning and contraception, well-woman gynecology exams and preconception counseling.

“We are deeply committed to providing a full spectrum of midwifery care to our patients across the Midlands and are pleased to offer increased opportunities for this skilled care right here in our community,” Lynn Johnson — Prisma Health’s manager of practice operations, obstetrics and gynecology and ophthalmology in the Midlands — is quoted. “The creation of a dynamic group of certified nurse-midwives is critical to provide individualized care for what patients want and need.”

According to Prisma’s website, the Irmo midwifery location is the first in the Midlands for the Upstate-based hospital system, which continues to increase its footprint in the area, where it owns the Prisma Health Children’s Hospital, Prisma Health Heart Hospital, Prisma Health Richland Springs Hospital, Prisma Health Baptist Parkridge Hospital, Prisma Health Baptist Hospital and Prisma Health Richland Hospital.

“Pregnancy and birth are key events in life of any family,” said Linda Balles, certified nurse midwife at Prisma Health Midwifery - Irmo, is quoted. “We are here to provide the latest in patient-centered care that provides women with what they need during birth but also during every phase of their lives. We want to create that safe space that each woman deserves.”
