The Congaree Riverkeeper has reached a $758,000 water pollution settlement.
Blue Granite Water Co. will pay the money to settle a years-long lawsuit over its I-20 sewage system’s effects on the Saluda and Congaree Rivers.
Congaree Riverkeeper Bill Stangler said the agreement with Blue Granite will help improve water quality in the Saluda River for many years.
Blue Granite will pay $350,000 to the Central Midlands Council of Governments.
$250,000 of it will support Midlands Rivers Coalition’s water quality monitoring.
$100,000.00 will go to a Water Quality Management Plan.
Blue Granite also agreed to pay the Southern Environmental Law Center $385,000 for attorneys’ fees and $23,000 to the US Treasury.
Michael Cartin of Blue Granite said his company is working to connect its Watergate treatment facility to the Town of Lexington.
