Ruritan elects new officers

The Pelion Ruritan Club recently elected officers for the 2019 year. They are President Kay Collings; Vice President Melissa Behles; Secretary Jean Haggard; and Treasurer Steve Neese. They will be installed at the December meeting.

Pelion Library will host Technology training for ages 18 and up November 14 at 10:30 am. Preschool storytime for ages 2-5 is November 14 at 11 am. TeenScene will enjoy Virtual Reality November 8 at 6 pm for grades 6-12. The Fantastic Beast Lock-in for ages 16 and up will be held November 9 6-8:30 pm. The magical theme will focus on Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them, a spin-off and prequel to the popular Harry Potter series. Yarn Art will be November 10 at 10 am for ages 13 and up. Author Talk will be November 14 at 3 pm for ages 18 and up. The guest will be Priscilla Shuler.

An interesting and informative “On the Table” was recently held at the Library. This event was by invitation and included questions and comments on three topics: What is important to you and your community; How do you envision Pelion 25 years from now; How can the Library help prepare our community for the future.

Met a new friend at the Senior Center recently. His name is Louie and he is a 14 year-old turtle who was adopted as a little guy. Go by and make friends with this cute little creature! The seniors will travel to Beulah United Methodist Church November 8. Members of the center participated in the Lexington County Senior Games in September. There were 17 participants from the Pelion center and they brought home 97 medals.

Forts Pond Elementary students are currently 76th in the nation on First in Math; No. 1 in the state. Chasity Parker at FPES recently made the “President’s List” at Grand Canyon University by maintaining a 4.0 GPA or higher.

Congratulations to the five finalists for Pelion Elementary’s 2018-2019 Teacher of the Year. They are Megan Rush, Art; Anita Hutto, Librarian; Heather Bradwell, 1st grade; Nichole Shumpert, 2nd grade; and Lauren Whigham, 2nd grade). The 2018-2019 teacher of the year is Heather Bradwell.

Congratulations to Ruth Ann Treaster and Kris Pratt who successfully renewed their National Board Certificates. PES currently has 5 National Board Certified teachers. Our 4th graders enjoyed a visit from Astonomer Sunspot Larry in October.

Veterans are invited to eat breakfast with students at PES November 12, 6:45–7:30 am. Breakfast for veterans is free and donated in honor of all who have served our country. The cost for other adults will be $2.40. The meal will consist of grits, eggs, sausage, bacon, biscuits, milk, juice and coffee.
