Say goodbye to old Gilbert High

Posted

Hundreds of graduates and visitors attended the open tour of the old Gilbert High last weekend.

The building was originally a grammar school in 1952. In 1980 the building was refurbished for high school classes until the new GHS was built in 2002 and the old building was again used as Gilbert Elementary.

All on the tour received a badge to write their name and the year they graduated.

The hallways and classrooms were open. The tour was advertised on social media. Many alumni came in groups.

“It was like an alumni homecoming seeing my former classmates” one lady said.

Reminiscing of teachers, curriculum, and experiences at GHS was heard throughout the building. “I am bringing my grandchildren so they can see the building before it is torn down” one former student said.

Group photos were taken of alumni by the year they graduated. District 1 board

District 1 board member Tim Oswald said the building would be costly to repair and does not meet the building code. The cafeteria and gymnasium will remain.
