SCANA: $180M Gaston deal done

Lexington-County based SCANA is telling investors not to worry. Its SC Electric & Gas subsidiary has just replaced 40% of the power its abandoned nuclear plant was supposed to replace. SCE&G bought the Columbia Energy Center, a natural gas-fired power plant in Gaston from LS Power for about $180 million. SCE&G pledged that shareholders, not ratepayers, would pay for the plant. Potential buyer Dominion Energy agreed to the same terms if it buys the company.

Business owner honored

Bobby Williams, head of Lizard’s Thicket, the 41-year-old family-owned restaurant serving traditional Southern fare at 15 locations, was awarded the Order of the Palmetto. Gov. Henry McMaster presented him with the state’s highest civilian honor at a ceremony at Terra in West Columbia.

New memory care center

Harmony Hills Development has sold 6.3 acres at Old Cherokee Road and Park Road in Lexington for $631,000 to Lexington Memory Care. Rhett Kelly of Southern Visions Real Estate handled the sale. The site will be the future home of Westminster Memory Care with services for 48 full-time residents with dementia. Southern Visions also handled the sale of prime downtown Lexington property. Disabilities reminder

To ensure children with disabilities are allowed to attend summer camp, the U.S. Attorney’s Office reminds operators they have special responsibilities and obligations under the Americans with Disabilities Act. Private and public camps must make reasonable modification to enable campers with disabilities to participate in all camp activities. This means that children with disabilities are entitled to attend any camp or activity that non-disabled children attend, that camps must evaluate each child on an individual basis.

Networking

Brandon Powell, has started free networking for young professionals, Brewing Up Business. The monthly events are held at craft breweries and or tap rooms. The 5:30 p.m. May 24 event will be at Columbia Craft at 520 Greene Street in the Vista.

Kids Day update

Lexington Kids Day sponsors Jason Yoder and Jud Heldreth report more than 100 vendors were at this year’s event at Lexington Town Hall and Virginia Hylton park. Next year they intend to continue to make it bigger and better. 2020 will be the 20th year anniversary, Jason said, “so we need to come up with something for that one.”

For barrel builders

The Lexington Countywide Stormwater Consortium will host a rain barrel workshop 9 a.m. – noon Friday, May 25, at Emergency Medical Services at 407 Ball Park Road. The barrels will be built at the Public Works garage at 440 Ball Park Road. Those attending will build one to take home. The cost to attend the workshop and make a rain barrel is $25. Michelin scholars

Five local high school students have been chosen as Michelin Technical Scholars in Midlands Technical College’s Electronic Engineering Technology and Associate in General Technology degree programs. The s will receive full scholarships covering their tuition, fees, and books. They will also work part-time at Michelin, earning on-the-job training and experience in their chosen field.
