SCE&G lawyers dragging out hearings

Given time constraints with so many witnesses during the 3-week Public Service Commission hearings into SC Electric & Gas rates, a main concern by the chair seems to be getting through witnesses as quickly as possible and ending each day by 4:30 pm.

The chair has rightly reprimanded SCE&G lawyers for asking the same questions of the same witnesses over and over again, in a feeble attempt to get witnesses to change their answers. But the chair needs to put his foot down and stop the time-wasting badgering by SCE&G.

The commissioners are asking more questions than usual but some questioning has revealed that they were not tracking the bungled project as they should have.

It looks like the discussion is circling around the proposal put forward by the Office of Regulatory Staff, so we’ll see if that remains the case as we now face 13 SCE&G witnesses and 5 Dominion witnesses.

The chair should insist that repetition of information or the SCE&G position by those witnesses – far too many of them – not be allowed. The hearing will definitely go to the day or so before Thanksgiving given the pace of it now.

A decision by the PSC on the assignment of costs for SCE&G’s nuclear misadventure is still mandated by December 21.
